Dr Mouse

As a full on doctor of zoology (this title might get old at some point, but right now I still sign my emails with "Dr Joanna") I dress appropriately: the eared hat is a finding from Kuala Lumpur - who would've thought that woolen hats would sell in Malaysia?
Photos were taken by the talented Elena Ageyeva - her photoshoots, apart from being fabulous, provide me with the opportunity to practice my Russian. My photographer is very patient with me in that respect!

Bred to wear red

A while ago Miss Araven - together with Lady Carotta, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store and Wild Orchid - organised a competition for a set inspired by fashion from the 1920s and 30s. I am very proud and honoured to present to you the winning outfit, along with other pictures from the same shoot (by Marten Collins, and his talented four-legged assistant, Zebedy). Yay! Thank you!

Jakiś czas temu Panna Araven - razem z Lady Carottą, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store i Wild Orchid - zorganizowała konkurs "Akcja elegancja", inspirowany latami 20stymi i 30stymi. Hurra! Dziękuję!

Szara Sarah

A couple of weeks ago my housemate Sarah moved to New Zealand, to live among elves of Rivendell (or something along those lines). It's a great shame, since, apart from being a lovely housemate, she's also a great photgrapher (as you probably recall from this post). As a Sarah tribute I am posting photos from a shoot that we have done together in Hinksey Park way back when. Enjoy. And visit Sarah's blog!

A tale of two hats: the battle hat

Another hat with a story. I bought it at the Otavalo market in Ecuador, with my friend's baby son in mind. However when I got home, two of my housemates, Sarah (who takes gorgeous photos) and Ian (who does pretty well on the posing front) almost killed each other over it. Since the battle was unsettled, the hat remained unworn for most of the winter, until I took it out to show Oxford what skilled Ecuadorians can produce.

Tha hat can be worn this way...

...or that way.

A tale of two hats: the foundling

This giant fur hat was given to me last winter by a good friend of mine, with the words: "Look, I found it in the snow next to the American Institute! Do you want it?". I did. It's warm, fuzzy, and pretty - and I wear it, even though it makes me look like a Red Army soldier. In fact, the same friend got me a pin with a red star, sickle and hammer, when he was in Barentsburg (the Russian and Ukrainian settlement in Svalbard) - I have not, as of yet, attached it to the hat.

Anyway, dear reader, if you feel that this is your long-lost hat - and can prove that you were near the Rothermere American Institute in Oxford last year - please come and collect it.

The photographs were taken by Adrian and Kasia on one of the three snowy days Oxford has had this year.

Tę olbrzymią czapę wręczył mi zeszłej zimy mój znajomy, ze słowami: "Popatrz, znalazłem to w śniegu niedaleko Amerykańskiego Instytutu! Chcesz?"

Circus freak

Jak powiedziała Kasia - ale cyrk. No dobrze. Jak cyrk, to cyrk, bez cylindra ani rusz.

Kasia said: what a circus. And there's no circus without a top hat. So here we go.

Moulin Rouge

It's been fairly competitive here lately! Wanilianna announced another competition (check it out here - and if you like the pictures, vote on her blog or facebook page), and I have decided to use photos taken a while ago by Marten Collins. We organised a 2-on-1 shoot with Adrian and Marten, but unfortunately Adrian's photos disappeared off his card, and so I can only present Marten's work.
For a while now I've been wanting to do something sassy and Moulin Rouge themed, and this here is what we have achieved. The skirt I normally use as practicewear for dancing, but it worked very well as a prop.

Skirt - a gift from a certain artistic, non-linear big shot named Jimbo
Gloves - the usual
Stripy corset - Primark
Stockings - a trophy from Wanilianna's previous competition
Hat - vintage
Shoes - Ryłko

Bonus - Marten Collins himself, as seen by Adrian Krajewski :)

Which city?

Some time ago Vintage Girl announced a styling, metropolis-inspired contest  (condition: the look is to include a minimum of two H&M accessories). Not easy, since - although I own quite a few H&M clothes - I don't have many of their accessories, and as of yet the chain has not opened a store in Oxford (why not? why?? they'd be raking it in with all the students around!). Using whatever I had at hand, I created two looks, inspired by...

... Los Angeles, and more specifically the Hollywood district, and even more specifically - old Hollywood...
... Los Angeles, a konkretnie dzielnicą Hollywood, a jeszcze konkretniej to powojennym Hollywood...

...and...
...i...

... interwar Berlin. Have you guessed correctly? It wasn't too obvious.
... międzywojennym Berlinem. Zgadliście? Wiem, że nie było łatwo.

El Pollo Diablo

Welcome back, and apologies for the long break; Adrian has been having a bit of a photo-crisis recently, so please keep your fingers crossed for next shoots.
Anyway, animals seem to be a running theme in this blog, and here we have a little black hen, so tame that she has been banned from outdoor lunches at Joanna's workplace for snatching people's sandwiches. Since we like accessories that match in colour but clash in style, we contrast our black and red chicken with a burlesque red hat and a black corset.

Ponieważ Joanna hołduje zasadzie "najlepszy przyjaciel człowieka najlepszym dodatkiem do stroju", przedstawiamy Wam czarno-czerwoną kurkę, która (mimo kontrastującego stylu) pięknie współgra kolorystycznie z czerwonym kapeluszem i czarnym gorsetem.
