Dr Mouse

As a full on doctor of zoology (this title might get old at some point, but right now I still sign my emails with "Dr Joanna") I dress appropriately: the eared hat is a finding from Kuala Lumpur - who would've thought that woolen hats would sell in Malaysia?
Photos were taken by the talented Elena Ageyeva - her photoshoots, apart from being fabulous, provide me with the opportunity to practice my Russian. My photographer is very patient with me in that respect!

Bred to wear red

A while ago Miss Araven - together with Lady Carotta, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store and Wild Orchid - organised a competition for a set inspired by fashion from the 1920s and 30s. I am very proud and honoured to present to you the winning outfit, along with other pictures from the same shoot (by Marten Collins, and his talented four-legged assistant, Zebedy). Yay! Thank you!

Jakiś czas temu Panna Araven - razem z Lady Carottą, Candy Store, Greta Vintage Store i Wild Orchid - zorganizowała konkurs "Akcja elegancja", inspirowany latami 20stymi i 30stymi. Hurra! Dziękuję!

Mniej retro, bardziej swetro

British winter is not really winter (12 C!), and the outfit is not quite in line with the retro theme of the blog, but my sweater-scarf is pretty awesome all the same and should be worn despite the weather. It's mainly fringe anyway! The photos were taken on Turl Street in Oxford - a little alley in the city centre, which always seems to have beautiful light, and which is a good place to dance in (see below), shop, or have a coffee (The Missing Bean is supposedly the best cafe in town).

Striking a dance pose with Ian's help:

A man on the street said that his dog would match the outfit very well - it did indeed, and we borrowed it for a few photos. I don't see many curly-coated retrievers, so getting to know one a bit better was a real treat.

Joanna's wearing:
- a Miss Selfridge cape
- a scarf from some charity shop
- gloves from primark
- boots (Jones) from a charity shop
- handbag from a charity shop
- a red flower key purse from my friend Haibo.

Ian's wearing:
- his dad's old jacket
- Reserved scarf
- trousers, boots and gloves from an unknown source.

The dog is wearing:
- A red lead.

On the other side

... of the world and of the camera. Thanks to my Cambridge friend Mike, a series of lucky circumstances, and my zoological profession, I ended up in my beloved Galapagos Archipelago once again. This time though I had Marten's camera (thank you!), and finally understood the excitement of switching lenses, adjusting light, looking for new angles and so on. Hopefully the pictures below will give you at least a bit of an idea of the absolutely mindblowing wildlife of the islands. Just wow.

Merry Christmas from Joanna (and Adrian too, I presume).

So, let me introduce to you...

A marine iguana. Legwan morski.

Galapagos mockingbird and Galapagos hawk. Przedrzeźniacz blady i myszołów galapagoski.

Magnificent frigatebird puffing up its pouch. Fregata wielka (pan fregata właściwie) nadymająca worek podczas toków.

A mockingbird inspecting the flippers of a sea lion. Przedrzeźniacz robi inspekcję płetw lwa morskiego.

Sea lion. Lew morski.
Two frigates robbing a noddy.

Galapagos penguin. Pingwin równikowy.
Nazca booby. Głuptak galapagoski.

Sally light-foot crab. Niestety, nie znam polskiej nazwy tego kraba...

Red-footed booby. It nests in trees, and when it perches it looks a bit like a duck trying to balance on a branch.

A swallow-tailed gull. Mewa widłosterna.

And finally, Galapagos tortoises. I have taken a picture of them with a mule, just to show the size.
I wreszcie żółwie słoniowe, na zdjęciu w towarzystwie muła, żeby pokazać skalę.

Golden age of Hollywood

I (Joanna) am incredibly lucky to know so many excellent photographers. At times when Adrian is busy I always have somebody to fall back on - in fact, one talented lady shares a house with me! And because all good photographers seem to be very friendly people almost by default, I can get all of them together, and mix and match! Here is a shoot with Marten Collins and - drumroll for the rising star - Sarah J Fordham. And of course, the Emperor of the dog world - Zebedy.

Welcome back, and apologies for the long break; Adrian has been having a bit of a photo-crisis recently, so please keep your fingers crossed for next shoots.
Anyway, animals seem to be a running theme in this blog, and here we have a little black hen, so tame that she has been banned from outdoor lunches at Joanna's workplace for snatching people's sandwiches. Since we like accessories that match in colour but clash in style, we contrast our black and red chicken with a burlesque red hat and a black corset.

Ponieważ Joanna hołduje zasadzie "najlepszy przyjaciel człowieka najlepszym dodatkiem do stroju", przedstawiamy Wam czarno-czerwoną kurkę, która (mimo kontrastującego stylu) pięknie współgra kolorystycznie z czerwonym kapeluszem i czarnym gorsetem.

And below are a few images by Marten Collins (Joanna poses with El Pollo Diablo junior):

The hat and the hound

A week ago we have had another joint shoot with Marten Collins; this time we were joint by His Highness the King of All Whippets - Zebedi. Zebedi (who usually resides with his humble subject Marten) makes one of the most elegant photographic props available out there. Beautiful, patient and very well-behaved - a mini greyhound is a must this season.
As is orange.

Podczas ostatniej sesji dołączył do nas Król Wszystkich Whippetów - Zebedi.
I kolor pomarańczowy.

- Hat - Reserved
- Dress, scarf - charity shop
- Bag - charity shop, originally Per Una
- Heels - Ryłko
- Earrings - own production
